Oil Painting Materials

List of suggested materials for prospective students.

 


COLOURS

Titanium White, Cadmium Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Indian Red, Light Red, Burnt Sienna,  French Ultramarine, Ivory Black

N.B. Basic colours are underlined, others are optional.

 

 

PALETTE

Medium to large wooden palette rubbed with linseed oil. Natural wood surface

(ie: not white)

Single or double oil dippers.

 

 

MEDIUM

Odourless Solvent, Purified Linseed Oil.

 

 

BRUSHES

Bristle Hog Hair brushes - preferably Round brushes. Sizes e.g.: 4,6,8,10,12. As many as possible – minimum 10. Odourless Solvent for brush washing. 2 tins for washing brushes.  Paper towels.

 

 

CANVAS

Commercially prepared painting boards (e.g. Fredrix) or Primed cotton canvas cut to size, taped or pinned to a suitable backing board, (e.g: Canite. Masonite, MDF board). The board must be light in weight.

 

 

EASEL

A lightweight portable easel (e.g. tripod) is required. Preferably wooden.

 

 

RAGS

Small pieces of clean towelling.
